How to Make Homemade Lye Using Two Ingredients

Lye is a chemical used for a variety of purposes, including making soap, performing chemistry demonstrations, making biodiesel, curing food, unclogging drains, disinfecting floors and toilets, and synthesizing drugs. Because it can be used to make illegal drugs, lye may be hard to find in a store. However, you can make the chemical yourself, using a method popular in colonial days. The resulting lye is potassium hydroxide. Lye can be either potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. The two chemicals are similar, but not identical, so if you are making lye to use for a project, make certain its potash-based lye you need. Materials for Making Lye You only need two ingredients for making homemade lye: AshesWater The best ash comes from hardwood trees or from kelp. Softwoods, such as pine or fir, are better if you want to use the lye to make a liquid or soft soap. To prepare the ash, simply burn wood completely and collect the remains. You may also collect ash from other sources, such as paper, but expect chemical contaminants that may be undesirable if the lye is to be used for soap. Safety Information You can adapt the method using materials available to you, but keep in mind three important points: Use glass, plastic, or wood to process and collect the lye. Lye reacts with metal.The process gives off noxious vapors, especially if you heat the lye to make it more concentrated. Make lye outdoors or in a well-ventilated shed. This is not a project you want to undertake inside your home.Lye is a corrosive strong base. Wear gloves and eye protection, avoid inhaling vapors, and avoid skin contact. If you splash lye water on your hands or clothes, immediately rinse the affected area with water. Process To Make Lye Basically, all you need to do to make lye is soak the ashes in water. This yields a slurry of residue in a potassium hydroxide solution. You need to drain the lye water and then, if desired, may concentrate the solution by heating it to remove excess water. In summary: mix the ash and water, allow time for the reaction, filter the mixture, and collect the lye. One method that has been used for hundred of years, if not longer, is to use a wooden barrel with a cork near the bottom. These are available from brewing supply stores. Place stones at the bottom of the barrel.Cover the stones with a layer of straw or grass. This serves to filter the solids from the ash.Add ashes and water to the barrel. You want enough water to fully saturate the ashes, but not so much that the mixture is watery. Aim for a slurry.Allow the mixture to react 3 days to a week.Test the concentration of the solution by floating an egg in the barrel. If a coin-size area of the egg floats above the surface, the lye is sufficiently concentrated. If it is too dilute, you may need to add more ashes.Collect lye water by removing the cork at the bottom of the barrel.One way to increase the concentration of the solution is to run this liquid through ashes again.If you need to concentrate the lye, you can either let water evaporate out of the collection bucket or you can heat the solution. Its okay to use a cast iron or stainless steel pot. Modern adaptations of the old technique involve using plastic or glass buckets with spigots rather than wooden barrels. Some people drip rainwater from a gutter into the lye bucket. Rain water tends to be soft or slightly acidic, which helps with the leaching process. Its not necessary to clean out the reaction barrel or bucket to make more lye. You can keep adding water or ashes to produce a constant supply of the chemical.

In order to identify the strongest leader, each factor of the model will be compared individually. Leadership is a process in which an individual can influence a group of people or the followers. The aim of the leaders is to motivate the followers to follow the direction towards success. An effective leader encourages the followers to participate in decision-making and take feedbacks from the followers in order to achieve broad objectives (Muterera et al. 2015.). There are different types of leadership such as autocratic, democratic, transformational, transactional and laissez-faire. The approach of leadership depends on the type of community or followers. For example, political leaders should have strong command over the followers. On the other hand, organizational leaders should have transformational leadership approach. However, leadership approach of an individual depends on peoples values, faith and cultural background. Discussion Nelson Mandela was the President of South Africa during the period of 1994 to 1999. The aim of Nelson Mandela was to reduce practice of discrimination from the society. Mandelas philosophy was to lead the followers by putting the team in front line. Mandela prefers to lead the followers from front line during the critical time (Pietersen 2015). Following is the evaluation of five-factor model of personality in order to understand leadership style of Nelson Mandela. Emotional stability is the first factor through which leadership quality of an individual can be evaluated. In case of Nelson Mandela, the ability of emotion control was very high. His ability to forgive people was a remarkable quality, which makes him the most efficient leader of that time. When it comes to Extraversion, Mandela was able to establish his viewpoint tactfully, without hurting others viewpoint. Agreeableness was another quality of Mandela through which he used to accept and nurture every follower around him (Sternlight et al. 2015). During Mandelas imprisonment, he used to take care of the wounded or sick prisoners in order to ensure that people are getting the minimum care. Conscientiousness of Mandela shows that his moral value was devoted to the freedom of South Africa. He had initiated the movement for maintaining free and fair election in South Africa. Apart from that, openness was another quality of Mandela through which he had eliminated the practice of discrimi nation of his time (Sewpaul 2015). He had encouraged people to focus on humanity rather than discriminating people. He had allowed people to show up their uniqueness in order to achieve his vision. The overall evaluation of Mandelas leadership shows that his vision was to change the legacy of discrimination. As a leader, Mandela used to encourage his followers to share their feedback. He had the ability to establish his viewpoint without hurting others decisions. This ability makes him an assertive speaker. The quality and traits Mandela had shown, makes him a democratic leader (Arslan and Turhan 2016). His ability to encourage people in decision-making was effective in terms of changing the trend of discrimination. The Evaluation of leadership ability of Mandela shows that he was a democratic leader of his time. Democratic leadership is similar to the participative leadership in which followers has the ability to participate in decision-making. As per the Great man theory, leaders are born, not created. However, after evaluation of Mandelas leadership behavior, it can be said that his leadership was influenced by supernatural circumstances. He has a broad thinking capacity thr ough which he had influenced his followers. His vision was to conduct fair and free election in South Africa. When it comes to leadership ethics, Mandela had provided equal opportunity to people in order to influence the followers. Mahatma Ghandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) was a preeminent leader of India. The Indian leader born on 2nd October, 1869 and died on 30th January 1948. Ghandhi was one of the prominent members of Indian independence movement. The aim of Mahatma Gandhi was to free India from the dominance of British rule. In his life span, he had conducted ample number of movements including Styagraha and non-violence movement (Radhakrishnan 2015). Vision of Mahatma Ghandhi was to be the change in order to change the world. He believes that in order to change a legacy, it is important to act from the forefront. He believes to lead his followers from the front rather than leading the team from behind. When it comes to the Extraversion, Ghandhi had the ability to establish his vision among his followers. For an example, he has implemented the non-violence movement in South Africa and then in India. Citizens of India adapted his non-violence vision in order to get freedom from the dominance of British rule. As Ghandhi was self-confident about his activities, he wanted to establish his viewpoint rather than entertaining others. It means, Gandhis agreeableness was not sufficient in contrast with other le aders on his era. Conscientiousness of Ghandhi emphasizes that he was morally devoted to the freedom of India and therefore, he always follow his ideology (Singh 2015). He also influenced people to follow his ideology in order to gain successful outcome. Openness of Ghandhi was lesser that the other leaders in his era. He was devoted to one ideology through which he believed that freedom could be earned. The ideology of Ghandhi was to bring freedom without violence. The overall evaluation of Mahatma Ghandhis leadership ability shows that he believed in one particular ideology and therefore, innovation was not present in his leadership. Ghandhi tends to lead his followers from the forefront in order to make greater impact. The leadership evaluation of Ghandhi also shows that his assertiveness was the major reason behind his success (Radhakrishnan 2015). He had the ability to encourage people without hurting others perception. He believed in changing approach depending on the situation. However, his ideology remains same for all of his movements. Therefore, it can be said that Ghandhi was a situational leader. In this kind of leadership, leaders identify the situational need and respond accordingly. Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook Inc is a leader of contemporary organization. Mark was born in 1984 and leading the worlds largest social media platform Facebook. Being a contemporary business leader, Mark has many supporters and critics as well. However, this college dropout has efficiently leaded his followers, which makes Facebook the largest and most accepted social media platform for businesses and individuals as well (Menzel 2015). Marks vision is to implement innovative ideas in order to improve accordingly with the changing global trend. He encourages his followers to share innovative ideas in order to empower motivational aspects. Emotional stability: Nelson Mandelas emotional stability was high, as he was able to forgive people and stay focused to his vision. On the other hand, Mahatma Ghandhi had achieved his vision despite influences of British government. He had stay focused to his vision during his tenure in order to bring freedom in India. Apart from that, Mark Zuckerberg can lead the workforce without implementing discriminative practices (Schoeller 2015). Mark encourages the workforce to participate in decision-making. However, he makes the final decision in order to avoid unfavorable situation. The evaluation of this factor shows that all these leaders are emotionally stable and easily influences the followers in order to establish own vision. However, here, leaders from different time have been chosen. Therefore, it is difficult to understand the extent in which these leaders are emotionally stable. In case of Mandela and Ghandhi, both of the leaders are from political background (Gronn 2015). Theref ore, it is highly important to maintain emotional stability in order to influence the followers. On the other hand, Mark Zuckerberg is one of the most effective business leaders. Therefore, he needs to be emotionally stable in order to take the most appropriate feedback from the followers. Extraversion: This ability shows that how an individual can establish his viewpoint without harming others. It shows that to what extent the leader is assertive. Here, Mandela had the ability to establish his vision among the followers in order to achieve overall objectives. On the other hand, Ghandhi had the ability to influence people in order to achieve his vision. He had the ability to follow a fixed ideology through which he had achieved objectives of his movements (Teles 2015). In case of Mark, he believes in building healthy communication with the followers in order to achieve organizational goal. Extraversion capacity shows how an individual can deal with other people and how it influences others. In case of these three leaders, each of them are socialized and therefore. However, Mark is business leader and on the other hand, Ghandhi and Mandela was political leader. Therefore, Mark use to communicate with a limited group of people (Femia, Krsnyi and Slomp 2015). On the other hand, Mandela and Ghandhi were two social image of different era. They had different agenda for changing social trend, which is not limited to a group of people. Therefore, it can be said that Marks extroversion is comparatively low in contrast with Mandela and Ghandhi. Considering the leadership style, situational leaders need to change their approach accordingly with the situation. For example, in case of adverse situation, situational leaders need to take decision without communicating with the followers (Brown 2016). Political leaders like Mahatma Ghandhi had taken many decisions without communicating with his followers. On the other hand, Mandelas ability of communicative with assertive tone set up an example of democratic leadership. Agreeableness: The ability of agreeableness shows the extent in which a leader can accept changes or encourage the followers for implementing change. Mandela has shown a high degree of change acceptance in his life. His communication power helped him to build collaborative environment (Terman and Feiock 2015). On the other hand, Mahatma Ghandhi followed his ideology throughout his life. Therefore, it can be said that agreeableness of Ghandhi was lower than the other selected leaders in this paper. When it comes to Mark, the co-founder of Facebook has shows a revolutionary change in organizational leadership. Mark has the ability of stay around people and helps them from behind. He never forces his team to accept change and instead, he always seek viewpoint of people (Pilster, Bhmelt and Tago 2015). In this manner, Mark always communicates with the workforce before implementing any change within the organization. He accepts decisions of the followers while making the final decision. T herefore, it can be said that in transformational leadership approach, agreeableness of a leader tends to be high. Therefore, it can be said that in demographic and situational leadership, agreeableness of a leader may vary. However, transformational approach helps to change and improve current situation continuously with collaborative approach. In contrary, it can be said that political leaders should consider autocracy as per requirements (Verba 2015). On the other hand, organizational leaders should value followers viewpoint in order to empower performance quality. As the field of leadership is different for the selected leaders, it would be difficult to judge the most effective approach. However, considering the leadership traits, it can be said that agreeableness can be high with transformational approach. Conscientiousness: Conscientiousness defines moral values of a leader. Here, all selected leaders have shows high moral value. When it comes to the leadership style of Ghandhi and Mandela, both of them was has a particular ideology. They always show devotion towards their vision in order to achieve overall goals. On the other hand, Mark has shows low discriminative approach, through which people can get equal opportunity (Frohlich and Oppenheimer 2015). Mandelas aim was to reduce discriminative practice in South Africa. Mark and Mandela both have shows moral values while leading a group of people. On the other hand, Ghandhi shows the value of ideology instead of reducing discriminative practice. Therefore, it can be said that all selected leaders have taken ethical decisions. The overall evaluation of this factor shows that an individual needs to avoid discriminations and give equal opportunity to the followers in order to make positive impact. However, in case of situational leadership, an individual should change approach according to the situational requirements. For example, the leader should take urgent decisions in diverse situation. Ghandhi was a situational leader, who has taken many urgent decisions like withdrawing the non-violence movement (Wei, Lee and Ho Kwong 2016). Therefore, it can be said that in democratic and transformational leadership, leaders can show ethical decision-making ability. Openness: This factor shows how a leader can adopt innovation while decision-making. In this paper, three leaders have been analyzed in order to identify the most effective leadership approach. In case of Mandela, he had shown the ability of communicating with people. In his personal life, he always gives value to others thinking and perceptions, which makes him different from other leaders (Malik, Dhar and Handa 2016). When it comes to Mahatma Ghandhi, he has his own ideology and therefore, he never entertained innovation while decision-making. On the other hand, Mark has shows the highest extent of innovative decision-making. In contemporary business environment, leaders should have the ability to take innovative decisions. On the other hand, in political leadership, leaders may need to take traditional decision-making process. Therefore, it is not possible to judge the effectiveness of leadership approach within these three leaders (Muterera et al. 2015). However, the overall eval uation shows that Mark has adopted innovative decision-making process, which helps him to gain competitive advantages. Considering contemporary business environment, leadership approach of Mark is the most effective. On the other hand, considering political leadership, approach of Mandela was efficient. Conclusion While concluding, it can be said that leaders selected in this people have different approach. Mark Zuckerberg is a transformational leader, Nelson Mandela was a democratic leader and Mahatma Ghandhi was a situational leader. After evaluating the leadership approach of these three leaders factor by factor, it can be said that leadership approach of Mark Zuckerberg is the most effective approach for the contemporary business environment. On the other hand, while considering political leadership, approach of Mandela was effective. Mandela was able to adopt innovation while leading the team. His ability of openness helped him to influence the followers with his vision. Just before the economical downfall, many people worked on the land, in the agraric sectors. But technology had, as it always has, a cheaper answer to the quest for lower costs. Many people were replaced by machines, making the land-owner able to provide the same amount of products with fewer workers on the land. This lead to the gigantically high unemployment rates, which on its turn lead to an extremely high amount of overproduction (after all, people with no jobs could hardly spend much money on primary and secondary needs, let alone tertiary needs). This had a great impact on society back then. Because of the great poverty, people had to change their lives. And so many people did, leading to a different kind of society, with different kinds of relations. However, not only then, but also nowadays technology has its impact on society. At present many countries in the world face a hard economic time. With large gaps in the consumers confidence in the United States and Europe the short-term prospect does not look very colorful. This, evidently, changes the way society works. Especially when one considers that we currently live in a consumer society, and when consumers lack faith, so does society. But how did we come to live in a consumers society? Let’s look back a while. After World War II, there began to evolve a large need for machines that make life easier. Cars, airplanes, household-machines (such as vacuum cleaners, ovens, microwaves), televisions, you name it and it was produced. It began to become a hype, to always have better material possesions than the people in society around you. Having the maniest, newest material possesions stated that you were wealthy. And wealthyness made people respect you. And even today, when we look at cars, cellular phones and computers we still want the  best to make an impression on the people around us. If this advancement in technology hadn’t been here society would simply have looked completely different. We would not have tried to squeeze out every cent of our incomes to pay for a vacation trip that is better and longer than last years. We would not massively have ran to our banks for even larger loanes, for which we ‘only’ have to pay 11% interest, in order to buy that all-important house on Martha’s Vineyard. If we would not have been so hungry for wealth there wouldn’t be so many poor people existent as today. In the US alone, over 17 per cent of the population lives life below the poverty line. And why? Because they didn’t realize that when they lost their jobs they wouldn’t be able to pay for their huge debts they had from their loanes. By the way, would it be a coinsidence that the US contributes the most to the technology sector, and also has the largest consumers society in the world? Surely, we realize these facts, but still we remain in the same pattern, seeking life happiness in material possesions. This pattern is all caused by the technology sector, making people want more than they can have. It has shaped our society into a consumers society.

Marble Chip Investigation Essay

Fair Test To make it a fair test and make my results more accurate I will try and keep all variables constant except the concentration of the acid. This will include weighing the marble chips every time and trying to use lumps of roughly the same size to keep the surface area fairly constant as a change in surface area will affect the rate of reaction. I will try and avoid a change in temperature and I will use the same equipment throughout the tests. Each concentration will be repeated at least once to improve accuracy as an average can be taken. Research The rate of reaction depends upon two factors, the number of collisions within a time between the reactants, and the fraction of these collisions that are successful. Therefore, the higher the concentration of the reactants, the higher the rate of reaction because there will be an increased number of collisions, this is called collision theory. However, for the reaction between the two reactants to be successful, they must collide with enough energy to react, the energy needed to react is known as  activation energy. This can be shown on a graph like the one below, I believe this graph is similar to what the energy diagram would be for my investigation. This shows that my chemical reaction will be exothermic, therefore it will release more energy than it uses to react. Therefore, at a higher concentration, there will be more reactions releasing energy in the form of heat that will enable more particles to reach their activation energy level and react. This shows that the rate of reaction will increase with the concentration of acid. Prediction After having done some research I feel that I can make an education prediction concerning what will happen during my investigation. I predict that the higher the concentration of acid I use, the faster the rate of reaction will be. I think this because the higher the concentration is, the more acid particles there will be to collide with the marble chip with enough energy to cause a reaction as explained in collision theory. I also believe that the rate of reaction will increase with concentration of acid because the chemical reaction I am doing is an exothermic reaction. Therefore, it will release energy as the reactions take place, this will give more energy to other particles around it and will cause the reaction to speed up as more particles reach their activation energy and collide with enough energy to react. Preliminary test results I started with 10g of marble chip and 100cm3 of 2M acid, the reaction was too fast and could not be accurately measured. I then tried 3g of marble chip with the same amount of 2M acid (100cm3), this worked fine, however, when the 0.4M concentration was tested the reaction was too slow and could not be accurately measured due to our scale. I then tried 6g of marble chip and it gave 135 cm3 of CO2 with the 2M concentration and 5 cm3 of CO2 with the 0.4M concentration. I felt that this would give us a good range of results so I  stuck with those measurements based on my preliminary tests. Observations When we had done our experiment we realised that we could benefit from some tests with other concentrations of acid to increase accuracy. Therefore we decided to do tests with 1.8M, 1.4M, 1M, 0.6M and 0.2M acid. However, when we did these tests they produced a much higher volume of carbon  dioxide than we would expect from our previous results. I came to the conclusion that this would have to be down to a change in one of the variables. Looking at the variables it was possible that it could have been temperature or surface area of the marble chips that caused the change, but as there had not been any large change in these variables it was unlikely that they would have such a clear affect on the results. After doing a few tests I found that it was the acid that I was using that had affected the results, I had started on a new batch of acid as the previous bottle had run out. Even though both batches of acid were labelled as being 2M, it was clear that one was stronger than the other and therefore increased the rate of reaction as the chance of acid particles colliding with the marble chip had been increased as there were more acid particles. Due to this, I plotted there results as a separate line, however, the results still show the same pattern and are therefore still useful in concluding the relation between gas given off and the concentration of acid, as explained by collision theory. Conclusion As you can see on the graph, both lines go up in a smooth curve. This shows that there is a correlation between concentration of acid and the volume of gas given off. As the concentration of acid increases so does the volume of gas, therefore they are proportional. The gradient of the line gets steeper as the concentration increases, this means that there was a larger increase of gas produced between 1.6M and 2M, than there was between 0.4M and 0.8M, even though the increase in concentration of acid was 0.4M in both. The graph shows that at higher concentrations of acid, more carbon dioxide was produced but in the same amount of time. This shows that at higher concentrations, the rate of reaction must have been faster to produce more products in the same time period. This can be explained by collision theory and the ideas on activation energy that I explained in my research and prediction. In my prediction I said that more gas would be given off with a higher  concentration, these results show that I was correct. This is because due to collision theory, in a low concentration of acid the acid particles are spread far apart. This means that there is very little chance of acid particles colliding with the marble chip with enough energy to react. In a high concentration, the acid particles are closer together as there is more of them within the same volume. This means that there is a much higher chance of collision with the marble chip, and there is more energy due to the energy being produced by the reaction, which is exothermic, this causes the reaction to be faster. This can be seen in my results, the 2M acid gave an average of 134.75cm3 of carbon dioxide, where the 0.4M concentration only gave an average of 4cm3 of carbon dioxide. The rate of reaction is reduced by a decrease of particles within the same space. Evaluation Accuracy of results I feel that my experiment was accurate because the results made a smooth curve on my graph. I did have a problem with the 1.8M, 1.4M, 1M, 0.6M and 0.2M acid results, as the acid appeared to be stronger than it was labelled. However, I resolved this problem by plotting the results as a separate line on my graph and they still showed a very similar curve to the other one showing the same relation between concentration of acid and the volume of gas given off. This shows that it was probably just the concentration of the acid that caused the problem and not my execution of the experiment that caused the results to be slightly different than what was expected. I think that my results could have been better as there was some variation between my four results for each of 2M, 1.6M, 1.2M, 0.8M, and 0.4M. However I do not feel this problem is major as the variations were relatively small as is shown by the error margins drawn on my graph, but there is still room for improvement. Possible Improvements If I was to do this investigation again I would try and keep some of the variables constant that I had less control over. The investigation was carried out over a few days so the classroom temperature may have varied. This could have had a slight effect on the rate of reaction making my results less accurate. Although the marble chips were roughly the same size they weren’t all exactly the same shape. If I could find a way to make the marble chips all the same shape and size then the investigation would be fairer as the surface area of the marble chips would be constant. If I was to do this investigation again I would try and use only one batch of acid for the whole experiment because as I found out, the acid supplied isn’t always exactly the strength that it says it is. I would also try to use a more accurate piece of equipment to measure the volume of gas produced, using a measuring cylinder did not provide the best accuracy that was open to me. I could have achieved a higher level of accuracy with a buret.

Critiquing Qualitative Research, Essay/Paper Sample Critique of a Qualitative Research Abstract This essay entails qualitative research study critique. The main research study that will be critiqued is Mr. Seda’s Identity theft and university students: do they know, do they care? Published in 2014.   Mr. Ludek Seda lectures at Flinders Business School. He has different qualifications such as Bachelor of Legal Studies (Police University of the Czech Republic), Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) (Flinders University), Certified Fraud Examiner (Association of Certified Fraud Examiners), among other. His responsibility includes FBS Academic Integrity Coordinator. Throughout his research study, Mr. Ludek used semi-structured interviews that were periodically scheduled. The interviews served as the primary tool for collection of data. Twelve undergraduate students from Flinders Business School were sampled out of the entire population for the purpose of research. There were six females and six male and face-to-face interview design was used. The purpose of the research was to offer an explanation of factors influencing the relationship between University student’s awareness of identity theft risks and the prohibitory steps they take. My critique of Mr. Seda’s Identity theft and university students: do they know, do they care?   Will involve holistically evaluating the study as an epitome of a qualitative research. Moreover, I will base my arguments on factors that must be considered when developing research questions and research approaches for a qualitative research (Seda, 2014). Critique of a Qualitative Research The Identity theft and university students: do they know, do they care? Has two research questions. The first question- Do university students know about identity theft? Second question- Do university students care about identity theft? These two research questions are valid and within the scope of the research study. The research uses these questions as a guidance for his research. They focus on the identity theft. The questions have exploratory verbs and specify the participants. The research questions are developed with long-term agenda. Furthermore, they are well defined (Bryman, 2012). The qualitative research approach used in the study is semi-structured interviews.   The following are the ways in which the researcher develops the design: The first thing is that he prepares the questions ahead of time. At this stage the interviewer gets ready for the data collection by scheduling his dates of carrying out the interviews. Consequently, the questions set are open-ended. The open-ended questions provide the opportunity for discussions that diverge from guide of interview.   The researcher is able to tape-record the interviews and analyze them after transcript. However, the disadvantage of semi-structured interview is that it is difficult to conducting interview and putting down notes simultaneously. Developing a dialogue and rapport are essential in offsetting the difficulty of recording the interview while conducting the interview. Mr. Ludek uses semi-structured interviews that are periodically schedule (Rowley, 2012). The research study contains logical and clear connections with the components. The design choice puts ethical implications into consideration. For example, Seda chooses to interview six female and six male students. His choice of design is fair and just to gender divide because it does not show gender discrimination. The identity theft is a problem affecting both female and male students (Australian Crime Commission , 2011). Conclusion In conclusion, Seda’s Identity theft and university students: do they know, do they care? is a qualitative research study whose research questions and alignment exemplifies all the requirements for a perfect qualitative study. He is believed to have fought in the Reconquista in Spain, and may have gone on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. When Pope Urban made his call for Crusade in 1095, Raymond was the first leader to take up the cross. Already past 50 and considered elderly, the count left the lands hed so carefully consolidated in the hands of his son and committed to go on a perilous journey to the Holy Land along with his wife. In the Holy Land, Raymond proved to be one of the most effective leaders of the First Crusade. He helped capture Antioch, then led the troops onward to Jerusalem, where he participated in a successful siege yet refused to become king of the vanquished city. Later, Raymond captured Tripoli and built near the city the castle of Mons Peregrinus (Mont-Pà ¨lerin). He died there in February, 1105. Raymond was missing an eye; how he lost it remains a matter of conjecture. Diversity Organizations Essay For years throughout U.S. history women were not afforded the same rights that men were. Throughout history women were thought of being intellectually inferior to men and a source of evil and temptation (Womens International Center, 1994). In early America women were not allowed to vote or work outside of their home and were ridiculed when they did. It was the culture of early America that women were to remain behind the men being in a supportive role but not to voice their opinions. Through much suffrage, it was not until 1848 that the women’s movement came to its beginnings. Focusing on the social, civil, and religious condition and rights women at the Seneca Falls Convention in New York began to express their rights and wants. Headed by Elizabeth C. Stanton and Lucretia Mott, it marked a new era for women in the United States. While the right for equality continued and the creation of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) by Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, it brought opposition of the 14th and 15th Amendments (extending citizenship rights and granting voting rights to freedmen) due to its exclusion of women (U.S. Office of Art Archives, n.d.). By the 1920’s the struggle for equality was answered and the status of women had grown. On August 18, 1920, the right to vote was ratified by the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution affording the right to vote for women. Today, women throughout the U.S. still fight for woman equality through established organizations. The National Organization for Women (a major source of protection on workplace equality and reproductive rights) has been at the forefront in support of women. With the assistance of so many organizations in the fight for women’s rights, that statuses of women are equally more today than that of years passed. Status of women in United States history today The role and status of women has drastically changed throughout the decades. Women have taken a more responsible role outside of the home in joining the  workforce. From being one-third of the workforce in the late 60’s, they make up more than half of the force in the U.S. today. According to Center for American Progress (2014), women have also gained a considerable role within politics in the country with record numbers serving in congress (para. 1). With the fight to end gender discrimination by big insurance companies, women have solidified their economic security. Constructions of masculinity and femininity seen in society and media As American culture continuously evolves, so do the lines of male and female roles and functions. Society’s view of masculine and feminine roles has become embedded in the minds of people. From an employment standpoint, society views for example that doctors and lawyers are one of a masculine role whereas nurses, teachers or social workers would be more of a feminine role. The media’s portrayal is just as bias to the constructions of masculinity and femininity. An example in modern media would be that tattoos and a considerable amount of muscle mass would be viewed as one of a masculine trait. More often the depictions are movies; music videos and even in magazines. The role of a homemaker has been viewed for example as one of a feminine role. Although the depictions are in the mainstream, it has been a barrier broken down by both men and women taking on varied diverse roles. Status of GLBT people historically The GLBT community, throughout history has faced much discrimination and prejudice. The GLBT community has had it hurdles of being socially acceptable and still does today. In the United States, members of the GLBT community historically were a cultural minority. Through much oppression, the gay liberation movement of the 1970’s brought forth pride marches every June in the United States. During the 80’s socially the status of the GLBT community was decimated by the AIDS epidemic. This led to fear and ridicule being described as the, â€Å"Gay Man’s Cancer†. There has never been a more separation of social status with any other community than of the GLBT community. Status of GLBT people today Although America is widely divided today attitudes are changing rapidly in acceptance of gays and lesbians. With the growing approval of same-sex marriage, basic civil liberties and freedom of expression for the GLBT  community, the trend of greater tolerance is growing. Over the last two decades, same-sex marriage has risen in support with 11% approval in 1988 to 46% approval and rising today. The status of patriotism and service of GLBT members in uniform in the past resulted in the uncomfortable compromise of â€Å"Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell† (Morris, PhD, 2014). This crusade like movement ultimately abolished decades of military forms of discrimination and dishonorable discharges. Although there are a great many that seek to dissolve, it creates an opposition between both the hetero and homosexual communities. Social and political issues relevant to women and GLBT people in the U.S A political issue relevant to women would be health care reform. With the Affordable Care Act it provides advances for the women’s health issues. The current pending case on contraceptive insurance coverage is an endless debate women’s rights and health. An extraordinary and yet accomplished issue for the GLBT community is the recent strike down of Arkansas 2004 amendment prohibiting same sex marriage (Volsky, 2014).
